Salzburg Festival

Opera, drama and first rate concerts

The world-famous Salzburg Festival (Salzburger Festspiele) has been the highlight and international flagship of the Salzburg annual cultural calendar for nearly 100 years. For several weeks during the summer months, the baroque city on the Salzach river becomes the world's stage. Opera, drama and first rate concerts of the highest quality attract lovers of culture and celebrities to Salzburg from all over the world.

It all started with Everyman

The Salzburg Festival was born in the year 1920, with the première of a new interpretation of the play Everyman (Jedermann) on the Domplatz. Staged by Max Reinhardt and written by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the founders of the Festival, Everyman has been part of the programme ever since, and when the weather is good it is performed at the beautiful Domplatz. The medieval mystery play remains the signature event of the Salzburg Festival to this day.

Enjoy culture in the city of Mozart

The numerous opera productions and concerts also make a key contribution to the reputation of one of the leading festivals of culture in the world. At venues such as the Great Festival Hall (Großes Festspielhaus) the Riding School (Felsenreitschule) and the Mozart Residence, international stars enchant a huge public audience every year. The famous names to have graced the stage include the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Anna Netrebko, Rolando Villazón, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sir Simon Rattle, Nicholas Ofczarek, Lang Lang and Riccardo Muti to name but a few.

In addition to its strong awareness for tradition, in recent decades, the Salzburg Festival has also provided increasing space for modern acts. Every year, over 250,000 guests visit more than 200 events which take place in July and August.
