Tourist destinations in the Salzburg region

Out of the city for a great experience

Although the city of Salzburg itself is replete with wonderful sights and attractions, you risk missing out if you don't make at least one or two excursions during your stay. The Salzburg region (known as the Salzburger Land) enthuses visitors with numerous tourist destinations. Start planning your holiday now with the following tips for excursions from the Eco-Suite Hotel Salzburg!

The Hallein World of Salt and Salina Celtic Village

Follow the trail of the white gold, whose story started more than 2,500 years ago, in the oldest visitor's mine in the world. Open all year around, the Hallein World of Salt (Salzwelten Hallein) makes for a great excursion, whatever the weather. The mine railway takes visitors into the mountain, and to the underground salt lake via two miners' slides. Here, a multimedia show creates a magical atmosphere with light and sound effects.

The Celts first mined salt at the Dürrnberg in Hallein in the year 400 BC. Today, this area is one of the most important archaeological excavation sites for Celtic graves, settlements and objects. Visit the Celtic Museum in Hallein and the reconstructed Celtic Village directly adjacent to the World of Salt, and experience a fascinating journey into the past.

Werfen Giant Ice Caves (Eisriesenwelt)

The biggest ice cave in the world in Werfen consists of the first approx. 1 kilometre long section of an extensive system of caves with a length of over 42 kilometres. When inside the mountain you will be welcomed by breathtaking ice palaces and an average temperature of 0 °C during the summer – an impressive and refreshing experience on a hot summer's day.

Untersberg Cable Car

It takes just 10 minutes from the city centre to travel some 2,000 meters upwards with the Untersberg Cable Car, the valley station for which is situated in Grödig/St. Leonhard. The trip in the spacious cable car gondolas, which travel up to 286 meters above the ground, is a certainty for impressive views. From the mountain station, paths and trails lead into the high Alpine region. You will find the Geiereck (1,805 m), the Monument to the Mountain Infantry, the Salzburger Hochthron (1,856 m) and the crowning glory: a panoramic view that stretches all the way from the Salzkammergut Lakes to the glaciers of the Hohen Tauern and the Berchtesgaden region. The Hochalm and the Zeppezauerhaus are the ideal places to eat.

The Silent Night & Local History Museum and the Silent Night Chapel

The Silent Night Museum (Stille Nacht Museum) in Oberndorf near Salzburg is primarily dedicated to the existence and propagation of the world-famous Christmas carol and the environment in which it came into being. The place in which the carol was first performed, the Church of St. Nicholas, and the life stories of those who wrote the carol, Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber, are presented. The Silent Night Chapel (Stille Nacht Kapelle) was constructed in the place of the Church of St. Nicholas, consecrated in 1937, and as an historic site, attracts numerous visitors from all over the world every year.
