Discovering Salzburg

Apart from Vienna, Salzburg is Austria’s most visited city of culture. Embedded between its local mountains, Mönchsberg, Kapuzinerberg and Gaisberg, this jewel of a city captivates its visitors.   Narrow winding alleys interacting with imposing buildings, like the Fortress Hohensalzburg or the Cathedral shape the appearance of the baroque city. Romantic people enjoy the fanciful backdrop of the Pleasure Palace of Hellbrunn and the extensive baroque gardens of the Palace of Mirabell. The uniqueness of Salzburg, which is often called “the only Italian city north of the Alps” won this jewel the award of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 1997.

The Mozart City is not only the birthplace of its most famous son – the house where Mozart was born stands in Getreidegasse - but also has a lot to offer for lovers of arts and culture. The Salzburg Festival with its wide range of opera, drama and concert performances is world famous. The timeless classic „Everyman“ may justly be considered one of the best known stage plays in the German-speaking countries.

Salzburg’s culture, its artists and its history have shaped the beauty of the city at the fringe of the Alps. Not least, the picturesque landscape with its lakes and mountains contributes to the positive attitude towards life in this city. You may already start looking forward to spending some days in Salzburg.

Whether on a mountain bike through the Salzburg mountains, hiking and climbing in the Alps, swimming in the numerous lakes of the Alpine foothills or skiing in one of the largest winter sports regions in Europe – the closeness to nature prepares the ground for a wide range of excellent sports opportunities. Attention gourmets! No other Austrian federal province can boast more award-winning chefs than Salzburg. From time immemorial, Salzburg has been one of the most important junctions between North and South Europe, ancestral seat of the Prince Archbishops and rich baroque city and can thus look back on a longstanding tradition of hospitality. The city is not only home for the classical Austrian coffee house, but also for Italian flair, hearty simple fare of the Alpine region, beer gardens and progressive fusion cooking of international style.

Shopping in Salzburg leaves no wishes unfulfilled.  Getreidegasse, at the heart of the Old Town, features fashion of outstanding international designers as well as arts and craft from the region.  The Old Town offers, on either side of the river, a unique shopping experience in a historical ambience.
